Son and Bergwijn up for seasonal Premier League awards

Wed 25 May 2022, 14:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son and Steven Bergwijn have both been shortlisted for end-of-season Premier League awards for their respective efforts against Leicester this term.

Firstly, Sonny is up for the Budweiser Goal of the Season for his second goal in our 3-1 win over Leicester City at the start of May.

A player who seemingly has a thing for scoring stunners against the Foxes following impressive efforts at the King Power Stadium in both May, 2017, and December, 2018, our number seven added another incredible strike against them to his portfolio earlier this month - this time, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box as we led 2-0, this season’s Golden Boot winner took just two touches to escape the attentions of Youri Tielemans before picking out the top corner with cracking curling effort.

For the award, Son will face competition from Aston Villa’s Danny Ings (versus Newcastle United), Everton’s Andros Townsend (versus Burnley), Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (versus Manchester City), Manchester City’s Rodri (versus Everton), Alexander Lacazette (versus Southampton), Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic (versus Liverpool), Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (at Norwich), Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo (versus us) and Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron (versus Crystal Palace).

Steven Bergwijn, meanwhile, is in the running for a newly-established award – the Castrol Game Changer – following his exploits in our incredible 3-2 win over Leicester City on 19 January.

With us trailing 2-1 at the King Power with 94 minutes and 51 seconds on the clock, our Dutch forward unforgettably struck twice deep in the space of 79 stoppage-time seconds to flip the game on its head and see us claim all three points in astonishing style. Those were also the first-ever goals that he has scored away from home in the Premier League.

Other moments players in contention for the award are, Paul Pogba for his historic four assists for Manchester United in their opening day win over Leeds United, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale for his save against Leicester City to keep out a James Maddison free-kick, Cristiano Ronaldo for his hat-trick for Manchester United against us in March , Kevin De Bruyne for his four goals in Manchester City’s 5-1 win over Wolves and Ilkay Gundogan for his brce brace for City on the final day, which helped them turnaround a 2-0 deficit against Aston Villa on their way to clinching the title.

As usual, fan votes will help to decide the winner – cast your vote via the link below to give your backing to Sonny and Stevie. Voting closes at 3pm on Friday 27 May.
