Harry Kane moved level with the great Sir Bobby Charlton on 49 goals for England after his penalty secured a 2-1 friendly win against Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday evening.

The Three Lions’ skipper struck from the spot on 78 minutes after Steven Zuber was penalised for handball via a VAR call. Harry, who has 49 goals from 68 caps, is now just five goals away from becoming England’s all-time record goalscorer, with Wayne Rooney currently top of the list on 53.

Steven Bergwijn was also on target for the Netherlands on Saturday. Indeed, Stevie struck twice, the first and last goals in the 16th and 71st minutes as the Dutch beat Denmark 4-2 in Amsterdam. Earning his 17th cap, Stevie played 77 minutes. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (53 caps) played the full 90 on a special night for former Spur Christian Eriksen, who marked his return to international football with a goal.

Staying with friendly action on Saturday, Matt Doherty (28 caps) played a full shift as the Republic of Ireland picked up a creditable 2-2 draw against Belgium in Dublin. Troy Parrott came off the bench late for his 11th cap.

On Friday, Hugo Lloris earned his 137th cap as France overcame the Ivory Coast 2-1 in a friendly with a late goal in Marseille. Skipper Hugo was forced into a couple of fine saves in the second half, including one from former team-mate Serge Aurier.

In World Cup qualifying, neither Cristian Romero or Giovani Lo Celso were involved in Argentina’s 3-0 win against Venezuela, a win that maintained La Albiceleste’s unbeaten record in South American qualifying. They are already on the plane to the finals in Qatar, alongside Emerson Royal’s Brazil and Rodrigo Bentancur’s Uruguay. Davinson Sanchez may yet join them with Colombia. Pape Matar Sarr was an unused substitute as Senegal lost 1-0 against Egypt in CAF qualifying for Qatar.

Bryan Gil scored Spain’s fourth goal in an 8-0 win against Lithuania in UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifying on Friday. He also claimed an assist before being substituted at half-time.

The Elite rounds of the UEFA Under-17 and Under-19 Championships continued on Saturday. Alfie Devine scored the opener for England Under-19s in a 4-0 win against Armenia. Alfie played 73 minutes, Dane Scarlett was an unused substitute.

Thimothee Lo-Tutala started as France Under-19s lost 1-0 against the Czech Republic while Matthew Craig came off the bench in the 67th minute as Scotland lost 3-0 against Hungary.

In the Under-17s competition, Jamie Donley started and Rio Kyerematen featured off the bench as England were toppled 3-1 by France. Tom Bloxham also came off the bench as Republic of Ireland were beaten 3-2 by Finland. Will Andiyapan started as Wales lost 5-2 against Turkey.
