Rosella Ayane fired Morocco a step closer to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup as the Atlas Lionesses reached the knockout stage of the Women's African Cup of Nations with a game to spare thanks to a 3-1 win against Uganda on Tuesday evening.
The forward was fouled inside the box on 14 minutes of the second group match at Rabat’s Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex and after a VAR check, picked herself up to drill home the opener from the penalty spot.

Uganda levelled before the break but the hosts responded in the second half through Nesryne Elchad and Ghizlane Chebbak to secure a 3-1 win, make it two wins in two and secure a place in the tournament's quarter-finals - where victory will book a place in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year. Before then, Morocco complete the group stage against Senegal on Friday.
Meanwhile, Rosella's club skipper Shelina Zadorksy was an unused substitute as Canada opened their CONCACAF W Championship with a 6-0 victory against Trinidad & Tobago in Mexico.
