Tue 05 July 2022, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur
Rosella Ayane, Drew Spence and Becky Spencer are off to winning starts with Morocco and Jamaica respectively as they bid for places at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Forward Rosella started and played 90 minutes as hosts Morocco beat Burkino Faso 1-0 in the Africa Women Cup of Nations group opener on Saturday. Next up, it's Uganda this evening (9pm, 5 July) and the final group match against Senegal on Friday.
The top four teams from the tournament will progress to the World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand in August next year.
Becky was in the running for Player of the Match as Jamaica beat hosts Mexico 1-0 in their CONCACAF W Championship opener. The goalkeeper produced a stunning tip around the post to deny Carolina Jaramillo in the 28th minute on her way to a clean sheet at the Estadio Universitario in San Nicolas de los Garza, Nueva Leon. Our new arrival Drew also completed a full shift in midfield as Manchester City's Khadija Shaw netted the only goal of the game on nine minutes. Jamaica next face the USA in a huge match on Thursday.
Spurs skipper Shelina Zadorsky is part of the Canada squad for the tournament and the Olympic gold medallists begin their campaign against Trinidad & Tobago this evening (9pm).
The ‘W’ has two groups of four and the top two from each group will not only go into the tournament’s knockout stage, but also go straight through to the World Cup.
Back in Europe, Finland pair Tinja-Riikka Korpela and Eveliina Summanen lost 2-0 against Holland on Saturday in a final warm-up friendly ahead of the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, taking place in England. They face Spain (8 July), Denmark (12 July) and Germany (16 July) in Group B - all matches at Stadium MK.
