Opening day - the stats

Our 4-1 win against Southampton on Saturday marked our best victory on the opening day of a Premier League campaign.

Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, an own goal and Dejan Kulusevski's strike handed us the perfect start to the 2022/23 season after James Ward-Prowse opened the scoring for the visitors at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Our previous best first-day wins in the Premier League were both 3-1, against Ipswich Town in 2000 (Darren Anderton, Stephen Carr and Les Ferdinand on target) and Aston Villa in 2019, when Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane (2) saw us home.

It's our best victory on the first day of a season since we beat Watford 4-0 in the old Division One back in 1985 - Mark Falco plus Paul Allen and Chris Waddle (2), both on their debuts, on target that day.
