Ben & Rob's preview - Wolves in the Carabao Cup

Tue 21 September 2021, 18:53|Tottenham Hotspur

Welcome back to the latest Ben & Rob's preview as N17 Live host Ben Haines and Club commentator Rob Daly look ahead to Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third round clash with Wolves (7.45pm kick-off).

On Wolves

Thoughts on our third round opponents...

Ben: "I'm really keen for us to go out with a strong side against Wolves and secure progress to the next round. Wolves haven't got off to a great start in the league, and I think we can add to that - ideally by playing in the same way we did in the first half against Chelsea. For all of the negatives people have thrown our way, it's undeniable that we were brilliant in the first half. And, with players continuing to recover from injury and gaining fitness etc, we're in a brilliant position to take the game to Wolves this Wednesday.”

Rob: "I agree with Ben – I would love to see Spurs playing on the front foot and as attacking as they were in the first half against Chelsea. Obviously things unravelled into the second half as Thomas Tuchel made his changes, but I am certainly of the opinion, like Ben, that there are more positives from that performance than have been made.

“In terms of Wolves’ result at the weekend (a 2-1 home defeat to Brentford), it was clear that Bruno Lage was very unhappy with the nature of their performance against Brentford. I saw the game and they gave up a number of chances in the first half, they were poor when pressed and Ivan Toney was extremely effective against them. There were lots of individual errors in their performance and it looked very unlike the Wolves team that did so well, I thought, against Spurs earlier this season. They were probably unfortunate that day to lose out to Dele Alli’s penalty and not score themselves, with Adama Traore being such a major threat."

League Cup hopes

Ben: “The League Cup for me is really, really important. I have a strong affinity with it seeing as it's the only trophy that I've seen our Club lift twice. I think the beauty of this competition is that by Christmas you can have yourself in a semi-final and if you get a kind draw, like we did last year, you put yourself in a brilliant position to win a trophy early on in the season.

“With the nature of the league this year, I think it's crucial that we perform well in the cup competitions. In a one-off encounter, I back us to be able to beat anyone on our day - we saw that versus Manchester City earlier on this season."

Rob: "I think like anyone associated with Tottenham Hotspur, you want to see the team push on in competitions and try and win something – and the League Cup is no different. We saw how disappointed the players were after losing the final last season. This group is desperate for a trophy and this is another one to compete for."
