Students kick off 20km charity walk at Spurs

Fri 15 October 2021, 08:29|Tottenham Hotspur

Students and staff from Highgate School and the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham (LAET) completed their bi-annual charity walk from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium yesterday (Thursday 14 October).

Around 1,000 teachers and students from the LAET joined their Highgate peers as they set off along the 20-kilometre route across north London.

This is the second time both schools have undertaken the walk, having previously raised over £82,000 for charity.

This year, both schools are aiming to raise funds for Extra Cover, a charity based in Sri Lanka. The mission of Extra Cover is to help some of Sri Lanka’s poorest school children grow up with hope. Money raised will go towards providing basic essentials, including food, clean water and textbooks to 24 remote village schools in the southern rainforest area.

Jan Balon, Head Teacher at LAET, said: “We are so grateful to Tottenham Hotspur for their support of the joint London Academy of Excellence Tottenham and Highgate School sponsored walk. As we walk up to 20km, starting in Tottenham and ending at Hampstead Heath, not only do we build relationships between students from different parts of the borough, but we also support local, national and international charities including Extra Cover. This is a fantastic example of the power of partnership.”

LAET is a state funded Sixth Form delivered on the Club’s stadium campus which delivers expert teaching, giving the brightest local students the best possible chance to access the country’s top Universities.

Sponsored by Tottenham Hotspur and Highgate School, LAET was recently named the Sunday Times Sixth Form College of the Year with an incredible 75 per cent of its students winning places at Russell Group Universities following this year’s A-Level results, including 10 students at Oxford and Cambridge.
