Internationals - Hugo wins the Nations League

Mon 11 October 2021, 09:52|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris produced two fine late saves to help France lift the UEFA Nations League trophy with a 2-1 win over Spain on Sunday night.

Spain had led through Mikel Oyarzabal in Milan before Karim Benzema's equaliser and a controversial goal from Kylian Mbappe turned the game around.

Hugo, captain of Club and country and a World Cup winner in 2018, then stepped in crucially to deny Oyarzabal before acrobatically keeping out Yeremi Pino's effort in stoppage time.

Hugo played the full 90 minutes while Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilon were unused substitutes for Spain, as Les Bleus became the second winners of the Nations League after Portugal in 2019.

Elsewhere, Giovani Lo Celso provided two assists and Cristian Romero enjoyed a clean sheet as Argentina beat Uruguay 3-0 at home in World Cup qualifying in the early hours of this morning (Monday 11 October).

Gio set up Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez either side of half-time, while Rodrigo De Paul bagged Argentina’s other goal. Both Gio and Cristian played the full game.

The result narrows the gap between Argentina and group leaders Brazil to six points after the latter nation drew 0-0 in Colombia on Sunday night.

Davinson Sanchez and Emerson Royal were unused substitutes on their respective sides.

The top four teams qualify automatically for Qatar, with the fifth-placed side going into a play-off.
