Sergio: “I love the team fighting in that way”

Mon 22 November 2021, 14:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Sergio Reguilon put our comeback against Leeds down to ‘a change of mentality’.

We trailed 1-0 at half-time of Sunday’s Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but the second half was a different story.

Harry Kane struck the post within seconds, Heung-Min Son hit the crossbar and it was no surprise when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg swept home the equaliser on 58 minutes.

With momentum firmly in our favour, Sergio completed the turnaround 10 minutes later with his first Spurs goal, racing in to convert after Eric Dier’s free-kick cannoned back off the post.

“We needed a second half like this for our mentality and for our work,” Sergio told Spurs TV. “Last week, we did some amazing work. In the second half, for sure, we saw the team that every fan wants to see.”

It's my first goal in the Premier League. I want the ball! Okay, it’s not a hat-trick, but for me, it’s brilliant

What did Antonio Conte say at half-time? “He told us we had to improve our mentality, our effort,” said Sergio. “In the first five minutes (of the second half), Leeds had a lot of corners but after that, the team was the team we’ve been working on during the week. It was fantastic. I love the team fighting in that way.

“We needed to get three points and now we go match by match. This is the way. We have to rest and recover well to go to the Europa Conference League (NS Mura away in Slovenia on Thursday, 5.45pm UK) with the same mentality as the second half.”

The sheer joy on Reggy’s face as he celebrated his first goal - in his 50th appearance for us, in all competitions - was tangible.

He added: “It's my first goal in the Premier League. I want the ball! Okay, it’s not a hat-trick, but for me, it’s brilliant. In some matches I’ve been close to score or assist but, today, I had the luck, and I can enjoy it.”
