Tottenham HotspurRyan Mason felt key moments went against us as we were beaten 3-1 by Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday.
The biggest of those moments was a fractional offside call that went against us when Harry Kane finished a fine move to make it 2-1 on 31 minutes. VAR disallowed the goal and momentum switched back to the home side, who took the lead again just before half-time and then wrapped it up late on as we pushed forward to turn it around.
Stuart Dallas opened the scoring on 13 minutes, Heung-Min Son levelled on 25, Patrick Bamford restored Leeds’ advantage on 42 and Rodrigo completed the scoring six minutes from time.
We had chances in the second half at 2-1, as Illan Meslier denied Serge Aurier and Erik Lamela, and Harry struck the woodwork. Leeds had chances as well though, and Hugo Lloris was at his best to deny Dallas and Mateusz Klich.
“We’re disappointed to lose,” said Interim Head Coach Ryan. “They started better than us, they were bright, got the lead and we responded well, scored a good goal ourselves and at 1-1, there was an offside decision, and it’s amazing what things like that can do in terms of the momentum of the game.
“We went in 2-1 down at half-time, disappointing, but I thought in the second half we came out and created some openings, we had some big moments and in games like this when it’s tight, you need to take them. We didn’t, and in the last 10 minutes we had to open up and chase the game and they scored another goal.
“Key moments went against us, and we weren’t as clinical as we would have liked to have been. Their goalkeeper pulled off two great saves, Harry hit the crossbar, the offside decision is also a big moment at 1-1 and, look, it’s a disappointing afternoon because we lost.”
We now have three games remaining, at home to Wolves (Sunday 16 May, 2.05pm) and Villa (Wednesday 19 May, 6pm) before the finale at Leicester (Sunday 23 May, 4.30pm).
“We have to win our next game,” added Ryan. “Leeds was the focus, we’ve had a disappointing result, so it will take a bit of time to get over that, because it hurts, but we need to work well, we will work well and we’ll be best prepared for next weekend, because it’s a big game for us.”
