Internationals - Harry, Hojbjerg on target, late despair for Young Lions

Wed 31 March 2021, 22:41|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane was on target again as England left it late against Poland in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying on Wednesday evening.

The striker and Three Lions skipper made no mistake from the penalty spot to beat Wojciech Szczesny and open the scoring in the first half at Wembley.

However, Poland levelled through Jakub Moder on 58 minutes and it took Harry Maguire's late strike to secure a 2-1 win. That's three wins out of three for England in Group I. Harry came off in the final minute and now has 34 goals in his 53 England caps. Eric Dier was an unused substitute.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was on target and assisted the fourth goal as Denmark picked up an impressive 4-0 win against Austria. The midfielder calmly slotted home for 3-0 having been played in by Martin Braithwaite after goalkeeper Alexander Schlager raced out of his area but missed the ball. Pierre then picked out Andreas Skov Olsen who fired in the fourth at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. Denmark top Group F with three wins out of three. It was Pierre's fourth goal for Denmark in his 40 caps.

Hugo Lloris picked up cap 123 as France overcame Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 in World Cup qualifying in Sarajevo. Moussa Sissoko came off the bench late for his 67th cap. Tanguy Ndombele was an unused substitute. Les Bleus top Group D with seven points out of nine.

Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp tasted late, late despair as England were eliminated at the group stage of the UEFA Under-21 Championship in Slovenia.

To progress, the Young Lions needed to beat Croatia by two clear goals and hope Portugal beat Switzerland. As the game ticked into added time, it was all going to plan - Eberechi Eze and Curtis Jones had put England 2-0 up and Portugal were beating Switzerland 3-0.

However, disaster struck in the shape of Domagoj Bradaric's thunderbolt in the 91st minute, and England were out on head-to-head goal difference, despite the 2-1 win. Skippy and Japhet both played the 90, with Japhet in central defence. Skippy was handed the captain's armband when Eddie Nketiah was substituted on 71 minutes. Ryan Sessegnon was an unused substitute.

Finally, in friendly action, Maksim Paskotsi started and earned his third cap for Estonia in a 1-0 loss against Sweden at the Friends Arena, Stockholm.
