Internationals – Sanchez spot on to book date with Lo Celso’s Argentina

Davinson Sanchez scored a penalty in Colombia’s 4-2 shootout win over Uruguay in the quarter-finals of the Copa America in the early hours of Sunday morning – and will now face Giovani Lo Celso’s Argentina in the competition’s last four.

After a goalless draw in Brasilia, defender Davinson – who once again started for his country – held his nerve to net Colombia’s second spot-kick, with goalkeeper David Ospina denying Jose Maria Gimenez and Matias Vina to send his side into the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in Goiânia, Giovani helped Argentina beat Ecuador 3-0 in their quarter-final.

The midfielder started and played 71 minutes as Rodrigo de Paul, Lautaro Martinez and Lionel Messi scored, while Ecuador finished the game with 10 men following the dismissal of Piero Hincapie.

Gio and Davinson could now go head-to-head when Argentina face Colombia in the semi-finals in the early hours of Wednesday morning (2am UK time). Hosts Brazil face Peru in the other semi.

Elsewhere on Sunday morning, Development Squad goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi appeared in his first matchday squad for Nigeria’s senior national team as they took on Mexico in a friendly in Los Angeles.

Josh, who was drafted into the squad in recent days as injury cover, was an unused substitute as Mexico won 4-0.
