Ledley King described our 4-0 win against Burnley as the ‘perfect response’ to last week’s loss at West Ham and a tough recent run in the Premier League.

We blasted out of the traps against Sean Dyche’s men, scored after 69 seconds and were 3-0 up at the interval, devastating on the counter-attack, clinical in front of goal.

Gareth Bale put us in front early from Heung-Min Son’s cross, and then pinged a wonder pass for Harry Kane to double the lead on 15 minutes. Lucas drilled home the third before the break and Sonny combined with Gareth for 4-0 on 55 minutes, a finish not unlike his strike against Wolfsberger AC on Wednesday night.

A clean sheet was the icing on the cake – not least as it was Hugo Lloris’ 100th in the Premier League.

I thought some of the football that we played at times was excellent... we have to be very happy with the performance

Speaking to us afterwards, Ledley, legendary former skipper and now first team assistant, said our start and transition from back to front was all important.

“It’s always the plan, especially at home, to start as quickly as possible and put teams on the back foot,” he said. “We scored an early goal, that was great, and that set us up and we were able to dominate the game, a really strong performance.

“The transition was a big part of what we spoke about before the game. We said we needed to pick up a lot of second balls, especially Pierre and Tanguy, as Burnley put a lot of pressure on you and it was important our defenders won the first ball and then we picked up the second balls and were able to spring from there. We were able to put together some good patterns of play, create chances, and we were happy with that.

“I thought some of the football that we played at times was excellent and maybe we could have scored more goals, but, overall, I think we have to be very happy with the performance.

“Although we were really disappointed with the result at West Ham, there were still a lot of good things to take out of the game. The fact we had 20 attempts, got into a lot of really good positions, then we had another good performance in the Europa League, it was important to kick on again back in the Premier League. Today was the perfect response.

“We’ve got a tough next couple of fixtures coming up, London derbies, but this is a great fillip to get a 4-0 win and going into those games with a lot of confidence.”
