Jose Mourinho felt the players deserved more for their efforts than a 3-1 loss against Manchester United on Sunday.
Heung-Min Son put us ahead five minutes before half-time but United shifted up a gear at the start of the second half and levelled through Fred on 59 minutes.
Sonny and Harry Kane forced reaction saves from Dean Henderson at 1-1, only for Edinson Cavani to head United into the lead on 79 minutes. We then struck the woodwork as Cavani’s flick away from Moussa Sissoko from Erik Lamela’s corner came back off the inside of the post. Mason Greenwood wrapped it up with the third goal in the sixth minute of added time.
“We lost against a very good team, but I don’t think we deserved it,” said Jose. “They had a very strong reaction in the second half, but after 1-1 we had big chances for 2-1, after 2-1 we had a huge chance that I saw the ball inside (the goal) but it wasn’t inside, of course, it hit the post.
“We were always in the game until the last seconds, when they scored their third goal, which I don’t think we deserved.
“I believe in this moment the empty stadium at home has changed completely the dynamic, the feelings... but good reactions after 1-1, good reactions again after 2-1, that’s why I think the boys deserved a different result. The reality is the reality of the numbers and the reality of the numbers are zero points and, in the table, the distance to the top four, top six is big after this game.
“I praise the players for what they gave, for what they put on the pitch, and when they put everything, even if there are problems, even if there are mistakes, even if it ends in a defeat, I always like to praise the players and always have good feelings for them.”
