Internationals – Spurs against Spurs in Sunday’s action!

Sun 11 October 2020, 22:07|Tottenham Hotspur

Several of our players found themselves competing against each other for their respective countries in Sunday’s round of UEFA Nations League fixtures.

In the afternoon kick-off in Dublin, there was stalemate as Matt Doherty’s Republic of Ireland battled out a largely uneventful goalless draw with Wales, for whom Ben Davies was once again in action.

The duo found themselves directly opposite one another with Matt operating at right-back for Ireland and Ben at left-back for Wales. Both players completed the full 90 minutes, with the hosts playing the closing moments with 10 men following the dismissal of James McClean for a second yellow card.

Later in the day, Eric Dier and Harry Kane saw action for England in their 2-1 win over Toby Alderweireld’s Belgium at Wembley.

Eric was the player penalised as Romelu Lukaku won and converted an early penalty for the visitors, but the Three Lions turned things around through a Marcus Rashford spot-kick and a Mason Mount shot that looped home off defender Toby to inflict Belgium’s first loss in nearly two years and put themselves top of Group A2.

Eric and Toby completed the 90 minutes at the back on opposite sides, while striker Harry was introduced off the bench mid-way through the second half but saw a golden chance to make it 3-1 with a header slip away in the closing stages. Harry Winks wasn’t in the matchday squad after starting in the midweek friendly win over Wales.

In the evening kick-offs, Hugo Lloris kept a clean sheet for France as they drew 0-0 at home to Portugal, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg played 90 minutes and assisted former Spur Christian Eriksen for Denmark’s second goal in a 3-0 victory away to Iceland.

The international action for our players continues on Tuesday.
