Internationals - spot-kick agony for Doherty

Thu 08 October 2020, 22:42|Tottenham Hotspur

Matt Doherty suffered penalty pain as the Republic of Ireland's hopes of qualifying for the European Championship Finals ended in a shoot-out defeat in Slovakia on Thursday night.

The full-back, earning his 12th cap, struck the crossbar with the fourth penalty after the delayed Euro 2020 play-off semi-final ended 0-0 in Bratislava. It was harsh on the Republic, who arguably deserved to win over the 90 minutes and extra time.

Elsewhere, Ben Davies proudly captained Wales at Wembley as England ran out 3-0 winners in the friendly. Harry Winks earned his seventh cap and played 75 minutes. Ben, earning cap number 53, played the full 90 as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Conor Coady and Danny Ings saw England home. Former Spur Kieran Trippier captained England for the first time as Harry Kane and Eric Dier sat it out.

Serge Aurier captained Ivory Coast to a 1-1 friendly draw against Belgium in Brussels. It was cap 63 for Serge. Toby Alderweireld wasn't involved for Belgium.

Wednesday's action

Sergio Reguilon saw action on Wednesday night. Earning his second cap, our recent arrival from Real Madrid played the first half of Spain's friendly draw against Portugal, a match played in front of 2,500 spectators at Sporting Lisbon's 50,000-capacity Jose Alvalade Stadium.

Hugo Lloris remained on the bench as France beat Ukraine 7-2 in Paris, as did Oliver Skipp as England Under-21s drew 3-3 in Andorra. Ryan Sessegnon came off the bench for the last 13 minutes as England lost their 100 per cent record, but remain top of Group 3 in European Under-21 Championship qualifying. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg wasn't named in Denmark's matchday squad as they beat Faroe Islands 4-0 in Herning.

Meanwhile, Brandon Austin has been called into the England Under-21 squad for Tuesday’s European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Turkey at Molineux.
