Ledley ‘transmits the values of the Club’ – João Sacramento

Ledley King’s knowledge and passion for all things Tottenham Hotspur is clear for all to see – and Assistant Head Coach João Sacramento says the chance to tap into that is invaluable for everyone in and around our squad.
A one-club man, legendary former captain Ledley joined Jose Mourinho’s staff as First Team Assistant over the summer, having stayed on as an Ambassador following his retirement as a player in 2012.
The former defender, who made 323 appearances for us over a 13-year tenure on the pitch, works alongside our coaches, analysts and playing squad at the Training Centre and on matchdays, while also supporting our Academy players as they look to step up to the first team.
“It’s a pleasure to work with him,” said João, 31. “Ledley is the kind of guy that is giving and transmitting the values of the Club. He’s a legend, an ex-captain of the Club who knows exactly what it means to be a Spurs player.
“The history with Ledley started when we arrived at the Club. Ledley was around, he helped us during that period and we could understand straight away the importance that he could have for us – and especially for the team – because he is someone who has the DNA of this Club.
“He’s someone who understands very well the values, he can share that with us and especially with the players. He’s very important for the players. On a matchday for example, he’s someone who interacts with the players a lot about what these kinds of matches mean, especially for the young lads, so for sure, Ledley is a good addition for us.”
Next week, João will mark his first anniversary at the Club along with Jose and the majority of the coaching team. What has the Portuguese made of his first year at Spurs?
“It’s a pleasure to be here,” he said. “It’s something special when you come here every day and you feel the dimension of this Club, and especially as well this kind of pressure on a daily basis where you know that you need to win. We even put a lot of pressure on ourselves to bring success to this Club as we want to be part of the history of this big institution.”
