Internationals - Spurs v Spurs in the UEFA Nations League!

Sun 15 November 2020, 22:50|Tottenham Hotspur

Belgium and Wales took the honours as our players faced each other in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.

Toby Alderweireld's Belgium got the better of Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Harry Winks in Leuven while Gareth Bale, Ben Davies and Joe Rodon edged it for Wales over Matt Doherty's Republic of Ireland in Cardiff.

Captaining England, Kane hit the half-century of caps for the Three Lions - the most of any Spurs player - but it wasn't to be for Gareth Southgate's men as first half goals from Youri Tielemans and Dries Mertens secured victory for the home side.

Harry had a header cleared off the line in the first half, where Toby produced a fine block to deny Jack Grealish. England had plenty of possession but couldn't dent Belgium's defence. Eric also started and earned his 44th cap, Winksy was introduced at the start of the second half for cap number nine. Toby racked up cap 103.

Defeat means England can no longer make it to the UEFA Nations League Finals. Belgium and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's Denmark will battle it out for that honour in League A, Group Two on Wednesday.

Gareth, Ben, Joe and Matt all started and all played the full match as Wales beat ROI by the only goal at Cardiff City Stadium. Gareth's looping header set up that winner for David Brooks on 66 minutes. Gareth also clipped the crossbar with a free-kick on his 86th appearance. Ben now has 58 caps, Joe nine and Matt 16 for ROI.

Wales have won four of five to stay top of League B, Group Four and now meet Finland at home on Wednesday knowing a draw will be enough for promotion into the top tier of the competition. ROI remain third ahead of bottom country Bulgaria, who they meet in Dublin on Wednesday, needing a point to avoid relegation into League C.

In UEFA Under-21 qualifying action, Gedson Fernandes scored a penalty as Portugal beat Jack Roles' Cyprus in Group Seven. Gedson played 90, Jack was replaced at half-time. Portugal are joint top of the group with Holland.

Troy Parrott came off the bench for the second half as Republic of Ireland U21s lost to a last-minute goal at home to Iceland in Group One. ROI are now third behind Italy and Iceland.
