Armed Forces Spurs on VE Day

Fri 08 May 2020, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Today (Friday 8 May), the nation comes together to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe.

The 214 members of our Armed Forces Spurs Supporters' Club would normally be involved in commemorative events up and down the country this weekend. However, many Members are now directly and indirectly engaged in a wide range of activities in support of the national fight against COVID-19, both in the UK, overseas territories, and bases across the world.

These range from our Armed Forces medical professionals working alongside civilian counterparts and public services creating nearly 100 mobile testing units, to national logistics and distribution efforts and engineering work required to set up NHS Nightingale and other hospitals around the UK.

Additionally, many of Armed Forces Spurs members are part of the Aviation Task Force Covid-19 Support Force. This provides helicopters that can be used by the NHS and other government departments to transfer coronavirus patients, quickly move staff to where they are needed and resupply anywhere in the UK.

Flt Lt Will Brooke, Chairman of Armed Forces Spurs Official Supporters' Club, said of his members: “In what is a very difficult time for the nation, where so many things are put into perspective, I’m extremely proud of my currently serving members of the Supporters' Club who are directly and indirectly involved in the national battle against COVID-19.

“We are very much all in this together as we join the country in giving our thanks to the medical professionals and support workers on the front line, both military and civilian. I hope that our collective support efforts will help protect those who fought for our freedoms in the Second World War, as we commemorate VE75.

“We all also proudly give a remote salute to Colonel Tom Moore, who has been a shining example to the nation during lockdown. Most importantly though, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure we have the liberties we enjoy today.”

Today, the country pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of the entire Second World War generation, from British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces to evacuees and those who served on the home front.

At 11am, the Royal British Legion is encouraging people across all generations and communities to take part in a national moment of Remembrance and pause for a Two Minute Silence to honour the service and sacrifice of the Second World War generation and reflect on the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on so many lives across the world.
