Winner of App ‘Goal of the season so far’ poll revealed

Wed 01 April 2020, 14:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son’s stunning solo effort in our 5-0 win over Burnley in December has been voted Goal of the Season so far.

The South Korean’s strike collected over two-thirds of the total votes cast in our poll, which ran exclusively on the Spurs Official app over the last week.

Reliving the wonder goal in the minutes after the game back on 7 December, 2019, Sonny described his thought process in those seconds of magic that led up to the goal.

“I saw Dele running on the left, and many players from Burnley," he said. "I tried to pass first of all to Dele, he was open but the right-back followed him and it was impossible to pass to him, so I just thought ‘shall I go?’ and put my booster on.

“It was the right timing to put the booster on! After two or three seconds I was in front of goal, really surprised and especially when you score this kind of goal at home it makes me so proud.”

Have a look back at our number seven’s memorable strike once more with our all angles video below while we also take a look at the efforts which complete your top three.

1. Heung-Min Son v Burnley

It was goals galore against Burnley in December. A total of five were scored to secure our biggest league win of the season so far and there were certainly some crackers amongst them - such as Harry Kane’s piledriver in the fifth minute - but none could match the third goal of the clash - Heung-Min Son’s 80-yard dash and finish.

Having won the Premier League Goal of the Month award for December, Son’s effort is one that has since been talked about as a strong contender for the overall Premier League Goal of the Season prize, so perhaps it comes with no surprise that is has been voted as your Goal of the Season so far.

In the move, Sonny was initially picked out on the edge of our box by a clever interception from Jan Vertonghen, before taking on most of the Burnley team and laying siege to Nick Pope’s goal. First bursting away from the challenges of James Tarkowski and Robbie Brady, he moved into the opposition’s half and glided past Dwight McNeil before swiftly evading the challenge of Erik Pieters. That burst saw him through on goal and a final surge of speed took him clear of the final two defenders, Matthew Lowton and Ben Mee, before he maintained his composure in the box to slot the ball past goalkeeper Pope.

Goals from Harry and Lucas Moura inside 10 minutes had already given us a healthy lead in the game before Son’s brilliance on 32 minutes. The scoring was completed in the second half as a second strike from our number 10 and a second in two home games for Moussa Sissoko made it 5-0.

2. Steven Bergwijn v Manchester City

In one of our most significant results of the season so far, Steven Bergwijn made his mark on his first day at the office as the January signing from PSV Eindhoven lashed home a stunning volley on his debut against Manchester City.

The goal came just after the hour mark but there had already been plenty of drama in the clash before that special moment. Hugo Lloris had saved an İlkay Gündoğan penalty in the first half and City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko had seen red just minutes after the restart. With those crucial incidents and the fans roaring us on, we took the lead with Dutch signing Steven delivering in style.

Lucas Moura was the provider – a sumptuous clipped pass into the box to pick out the winger – and our number 23 did the rest. Controlling the ball with his chest, he swiftly moved the ball into the path of his swinging right boot to volley into the corner – cue an eruption from the South Stand.

Eight minutes later the game was wrapped up with Heung-Min Son doubling the lead on a memorable night in N17.

3. Tanguy Ndombele v Aston Villa

It may have been our very first goal of the campaign but the magic of Tanguy Ndombele’s strike on his debut will live long in the memory. It came at a moment where we were being frustrated by Villa, who took the lead early in the game. We were in desperate need of something special to get us back on terms. And boy did we get that!

In the build-up to the goal, Davinson Sanchez had forced an incredible point-blank save out of Tom Heaton but as the ball worked its way out to the on-running Tanguy on the edge of the box, the England stopper would have no chance in dealing with what the then 22-year-old would produce.

Lucas Moura managed to get the ball out of his feet to slip in the Frenchman and with just enough time to set himself, Tanguy curled sumptuously into the corner from 25 yards out to send the 17,000 strong South Stand into a frenzy.

The turnaround was completed in the latter stages as a double from Harry Kane gave us the perfect start to the new season as we sealed a 3-1 win.
