'That wasn't a Klinsmann!' - Kane on Hammers celebration

Wed 24 June 2020, 11:20|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane was thrilled to mark his 200th appearance in the Premier League for us with a goal… but admitted he wasn’t trying to imitate the legendary Jurgen Klinsmann with his celebration after hitting the back of the net!

Starting his second game in four days after nearly six months on the sidelines due to injury and then lockdown, the striker ran clean through to slot past Lukasz Fabianski eight minutes from time and complete a 2-0 win over West Ham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night as we made it four points out of six since the season’s restart. Tomas Soucek had earlier put through his own net to give us the advantage.

Harry evoked memories of another legendary front man in Klinsmann when he subsequently dived forward onto the turf, much like the German star’s trademark celebration in the 1990s.

But he told Spurs TV afterwards that his motives for hitting the deck were somewhat different!

“That wasn’t even a Klinsmann, that was just a tired… it was a long game, a tough game,” he smiled. “With the sprint through, no-one could catch up with me so I just thought I’d fall on the floor and take a breather!

“It was a great night. The most important thing was the win, for sure. Coming off a draw on Friday we needed to get back to winning ways, especially for the momentum for the last seven games.”

While the night marked his double-century of Premier League matches for us, it was actually Harry’s 203rd top-flight appearance overall after his three games for Norwich in 2012/13. Injured at Southampton on New Year’s Day, he was pleased to be back among the goals.

“Obviously it’s a pleasure to make my 200th appearance for Spurs in the Premier League and yes, I’m delighted to score as well,” he added. “It’s been a while, it’s been nearly six months, I’d had a couple of chances before so it was nice to get that one through and finish it off.”

We return to action at Sheffield United on Thursday 2 July, kick-off 6pm.
