Here’s a round-up of what’s being said from inside both clubs ahead of today’s final home match of the season against Leicester City (4pm)...
Hugo Lloris
Spurs goalkeeper and captain
“Leicester have lost a few important points for the Champions League in the last few games and it’s a decisive game. There are plenty of them at this stage of the season. Every point can make the difference at the end of the season. At home, we want to finish well, we want to do it for ourselves, we want to do it for the Club, because we want to be in Europe next season.
“It’s not about throwing everything into the bin. This season has been very difficult. Of course, we were looking for a better position in the table. I think we should consider it a transition and I think this end to the season can help us start well next season. It’s a kind of way to prepare for the next one because we won’t have time to have a proper pre-season. So, yes, now it belongs to all the players to keep the same focus, the same character and finish the season with pride.”
Brendan Rodgers
Leicester City manager
“Jose has got outstanding players so they’re always going to be a difficult opponent for us. They’ve got talents that can hurt you at the top end of the pitch and we’ll be ready for a tough game. Harry Kane is a world-class striker. I don’t really know him at all, but he seems like a very humble guy who gets on with his work and obviously he’s done great for Tottenham and for England. He’s a top-level striker who scores all types of goals and is a real reference point for his club.”
On working with Jose as a coach at Chelsea: “You have to be yourself, but there’s absolutely no doubt that at that time, Jose was a huge influence for me. He’s an absolutely world-class manager who was brilliant for me as a young coach. His professionalism and how he devoted his life to football, his focus and detail, was incredible. Jose had time for me and always communicated well with me. He was so good in the media in that period, when I was there, so he was a breath of fresh air and I learned so much from him just from observing how an elite manager operates.”
Jose Mourinho
Spurs Head Coach
“It’s a big game. Since day one, they are in this position. They started the season very, very well and managed to be always there – third, fourth, third, fourth, third, fourth. They still are, and I’m pretty sure that in the remaining two matches they are not going to want to lose what was theirs for the whole season, so yes, a big match.”
Youri Tielemans
Leicester City midfielder
“It will be very difficult for us because Tottenham have a good team with good players. It will be up to us to play our game to win the points. We have to try and win all our games to stay where we are. We just have to look forward. We have two games left now to compete to stay where we are. We’re just playing our games as best as we can. It’s very tight at the top. As we know, in the Premier League, it’s very competitive, also at the bottom of the league. We have to be ready for every game and just move on and be ready to attack the game.”
