'It means more than three points' - Winksy on the derby

Sat 11 July 2020, 10:32|Tottenham Hotspur

A Spurs fan through and through, Harry Winks knows how tough it will be to play Sunday’s derby behind closed doors - he wants to win it for the thousands who can’t be with us, and the Spurs family around the world.

“We need to win first for the fans,” were his first words when talking about this historic clash - Arsenal’s first at the new stadium, Jose Mourinho’s first NLD encounter.

Academy to first team to England, ‘Winksy’ has worn his Spurs heart on his sleeve throughout his blossoming career, already with 139 appearances in all competitions and six England caps to his name at the age of 24.

In terms of Sunday (4.30pm), it’s a crucial match with us one point adrift of the Gunners as we chase European qualification with four games remaining of the Premier League season. Indeed, there are only three points between Burnley in 10th and Wolves in sixth.

I’m sure it will be passionate, aggressive, two teams wanting to win

Harry Winks on the derby

“It’s massive game,” said Harry. “We’re in and around the same position in the table so we need to win first for the fans, for ourselves, because it’s a huge game, and it will be a competitive game.

“Even if there are no fans there it will be still be a derby and still feel like a derby and being the home team, we need to go out there and make sure we win.

“I’m sure it will be passionate, aggressive, two teams wanting to win, obviously minus the fans, which will be difficult, not having them behind us. But with the circumstances we’re in now, we just need to keep focussing on ourselves, fighting on the pitch and working as hard as we can.

“We have the ability, but we have to make sure we go out there and win our battles first. We’ll try to put our stamp on it. We’re the home team, we need to win as much as they do.

“It’s a game that means more than the three points.”
