Ambitious guy, Spurs guy, and one of the best - Jose on Harry

Thu 16 July 2020, 17:41|Tottenham Hotspur

Jose Mourinho led the tributes to Harry Kane after the striker hit the 200th goal of his career in our 3-1 win at Newcastle on Wednesday evening.

Harry struck twice at St James’ Park to hit a couple of personal milestones – goals 200 and 201 of his career, and 20 goals in a season for us for the sixth successive year. He's now scored 185 for Spurs - third in our all-time goalscoring list, behind Bobby Smith (208) and Jimmy Greaves (266) - and hit 16 in loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall and Leicester.

Goal 200 was key on the night, Harry’s textbook header from Stevie Bergwijn’s inch-perfect cross handed us back the initiative on the hour, just minutes after Matt Ritchie had levelled Heung-Min Son’s opener. Harry added his second after Erik Lamela’s shot was parried by Martin Dubravka to secure the 3-1 scoreline.

People forget what he does, and people always demand more. If one week he doesn’t score a goal, there is always a drama

Jose on Harry

“Harry is one of the best strikers in the world, everyone knows,” said Jose. “People forget what he does, and people always demand more. If one week he doesn’t score a goal, there is always a drama around.

“But he’s a Tottenham guy, really wants Tottenham to win, wants to help, the goals are extra. I’m happy he’s scored two goals and reached that benchmark.

“200 goals at this age (Harry’s 26)... he's a fantastic player, a top goalscorer, an ambitious guy, young. He has a lot in front of him. So, let's go for 200 more. I believe let's go for 200 more.”

At Spurs since 2012, skipper Hugo Lloris has watched Harry’s progress through the Academy to first team regular, Premier League Golden Boot winner, Club vice-captain, England captain and World Cup Golden Boot winner.

He added: “It’s an amazing record and we are all proud of him and happy for him. You know Harry, he doesn’t want to stop at this stage, I think he wants at least 100 more!”
