Jose Mourinho felt it could have gone one of two ways after Norwich equalised with 20 minutes left of Wednesday night’s Premier League clash - it went the way he wanted, and he described the team’s reaction as ‘fantastic’ as we came home 2-1 winners.

A dominant first half display reaped just one goal as Dele turned home Serge Aurier’s cross on 38 minutes. Heung-Min Son and Erik Lamela also had sights of goal. Norwich, who also created chances, stepped up a gear in the second half and levelled via Teemu Pukki’s penalty after Ryan Sessegnon was pulled for a trip on Max Aarons.

Giovani Lo Celso, outstanding on the night, was involved in both goals and on 79 minutes, played in Dele, right side of the box. His shot deflected high off Christoph Zimmermann sliding in and looped to the far post where Sonny made sure, nodding home from close range as Tim Krul came flying across his line.

It was Sonny’s first goal since his amazing strike against Burnley (7 December) and our first Premier League win in five lifted us back up to sixth.

Great reaction, we took a risk, the players accepted the risk, we went for the goal and after that goal, intelligent... not one single dangerous situation after 2-1

Jose Mourinho

“I was confident about winning, I was confident about Sonny scoring a goal and I was pretty sure the game was going to be pretty difficult, so I didn’t make a mistake on my predictions,” said Jose, who did indeed say on Tuesday ‘we think tomorrow is going to be our day’ and on Sonny, ‘the goals will arrive and I believe that could be tomorrow’.

“We have to kill opponents when we are better than them," he continued. "If not, we have the risk. So, in the first half, we were much better, created lots of chances from the beginning of the game and 1-0 is not enough.

“Then in the second half, when the opponent starts to arrive, you shake a little bit.

“One situation, one penalty, then 1-1 and then what can happen? What happened could happen, or the team could give up and let fatigue win the battle, two points to lose. What happened was fantastic.

“Great reaction, we took a risk, the players accepted the risk, we went for the goal and after that goal, intelligent, hiding the ball, keeping the ball far away from the goal, not one single dangerous situation after 2-1, a few for us to once more kill the game. So, good points, important.”
