Exclusive: Kerys Harrop on switching West Midlands for N17

New signing Kerys Harrop says Spurs Women’s ambitions for next season played a key part in her move to the Club, having spent the last 20 years at Birmingham City, who she experienced much success with.

While with the Blues, Kerys won the Women’s FA Cup, competed in the Champions League, and twice finished as a runner-up in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

Now at Spurs, our new recruit has set her sights on replicating some of her previous success here with Karen Hills and Juan Amoros’ side.

“Your football career is so short lived, you get one opportunity at it, so I wanted to try something different,” Kerys said on her decision to join the Club. “Spurs are an up and coming team who showed a lot of promise in the WSL last season. After speaking to the coaches and some of the players that I already knew at the Club, there is good ambition here and it matches the ambitions I have as a player.

“Ultimately it’s about challenging for the top four. The league is going to be even more competitive next season with a lot of international players coming in. We want to push for top four which I think is realistic with the team we have and the new players we’ve brought in.

“We want to do well in the Continental League Cup and Women’s FA Cup and go on a cup run. I’ve played in two FA Cup finals and it’s an amazing experience and I definitely want to achieve that here with Spurs.”

The team are in their third week of pre-season training with summer signings Kerys, Rachel Williams and Aurora Mikalsen all involved in the action at Hotspur Way.

“I’m really enjoying it,” Kerys said on how she is settling into the squad so far. “All the girls and the staff have been really kind and have made me feel at home straight away. Overall, I have just had a really good start and I felt part of the team straight away.

“In my first week, I was training in small groups with the other defenders, they’re all nice and very kind. There is a lot of younger players in the team as well and all of them have good quality from what I’ve seen so far. With the likes of myself, Rachel and Aurora coming into the squad, it is going to improve the competitiveness in the team and the quality will only improve because of that.”

With the 2020/21 WSL campaign due to start in September, Kerys is eagerly anticipating our return to action and hoping for triumph in the season ahead.

She said: “I’m just looking forward to playing, it’s been so long, so I’m excited to be getting back into action, getting into this new team, pushing forward and hopefully achieving big things.”
