Late equaliser ‘tough to take’ - Matt on Molineux draw

Mon 28 December 2020, 13:41|Tottenham Hotspur

Matt Doherty knows better than most that a point at Molineux is never to be sniffed at, but his return to the club where he made his name ultimately ended in disappointment as Wolves struck late to deny us victory on Sunday evening.

Tanguy Ndombele’s fine strike gave us the perfect start inside a minute and we held that lead for another 85 minutes before Romain Saiss headed home Pedro Neto’s corner to level at 1-1 and leave us without a win in four in the Premier League, late goals hitting us hard in three of those matches.

“It’s always tough to take when you concede that late in a game,” said Matt, who made over 300 appearances for Wolves in 10 years at Molineux.

Once you’ve seen it out for 85 minutes, you think you can see it out for the last five. That wasn’t the case and it’s a bit disappointing

“I know we were under pressure for a lot of the match and they were knocking it around, but once you’ve seen it out for 85 minutes, you think you can see it out for the last five. That wasn’t the case and it’s a bit disappointing.

“We started really well, first 20, 25 minutes we controlled the game. Then they had a period, which is expected, and we’d seen it out. We got to half-time and regrouped, but in the second half we couldn’t get anything going and they obviously nicked a point at the end.”

Fulham are next in the Premier League as we return to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday (6pm) and Matt only has eyes for victory. “We wanted to win at Wolves, came out of the traps flying and that’s what we’ve got to do in the next game,” he added. “We now go into the next two games knowing we have to win to keep the pressure at the top.”
