Jose Mourinho has announced he has become an Ambassador for a Tottenham Hotspur Foundation scheme providing support for children in care to achieve better educational outcomes.

The Club has delivered To Care Is To Do for more than 15 years as it aims to help reduce the gap in educational achievement between children in care and their peers.

With statistics showing higher numbers of school absentees, school exclusions and unemployment amongst children in care and care leavers, To Care Is To Do aims to enable participants to:

• Achieve better results at school
• Feel confident and positive about their own futures
• Develop new and existing skills
• Raise awareness around healthy living and active lifestyles
• Prepare for independence and adulthood

This is achieved via a range of personal development and enrichment activities including cookery classes, money management courses, social events and days out, cultural visits, mentoring and provision of work experience.

Jose announced his support for the programme at today’s annual Haringey Educational Achievement Awards, where many young people on the programme were recognised for outstanding achievements in school.

Jose's message

The Club’s Head Coach will invite groups of young people involved in To Care Is To Do on regular visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Training Centre, where he will deliver mentoring sessions promoting self-belief and achievement.

He will also attend key events throughout the calendar - including educational awards ceremonies and social events.

Jose said: “I am extremely passionate about helping young people achieve the best they can in life and realise their potential.

“Children that have grown up in care often find themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to education and employment opportunities - the Club does fantastic work to tackle this through To Care Is To Do.

“This has inspired me to get involved and do whatever I can to work with this group of young people, offer advice and help them believe in themselves.”

In 2018, the Club joined more than 50 businesses, charities and every government department in England in signing up to the Care Leaver Covenant, which commits to providing work-based opportunities to young people leaving the care system.

Daniel Levy, Chairman, Tottenham Hotspur, said: “Our long-standing work with children in care is fundamental to the DNA of our Club.

“The importance of To Care Is To Do to everyone at the Club is underlined by Jose’s commitment to supporting the programme.

“Having a connection with someone like Jose will be transformative for this group of young people and give them the drive and belief needed to fulfil their potential.”
