Son: 'I can't wait to get the ball rolling again'

Fri 14 August 2020, 14:49|Tottenham Hotspur

It’s safe to say Heung-Min Son cannot wait for the day our fans are back out in force at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

We’ve been without supporters since the country went into lockdown to combat the coronavirus in March. Football returned three months later in June, but, sadly, matches had to be played behind closed doors with all appropriate safety measures in place.

Our South Korean star felt it most when he scored his equaliser in the north London derby against Arsenal. Sonny finished superbly and turned away to celebrate – but no-one was there in the stands, when the noise would have been breath-taking. Imagine what it would have been like when Toby Alderweireld glanced home his corner for our late winner!

Like the team, Sonny finished the season strongly, playing his part as we finished with five wins and three draws from our final nine fixtures to climb back into sixth in the Premier League and qualify again for Europe.

He finished the campaign with 11 goal and 10 assists in the Premier League – only the fourth Spur to do so – and his wonder goal against Burnley won Goal of the Season.

“It’s so sad not to be able to see the fans in our beautiful stadium,” said Sonny. “The players all miss these guys and hopefully we’ll see them as soon as possible. We miss them so much.

“We need the supporters’ help, but it’s up to us on the pitch as well, we’re playing football, not them. They have supported us amazingly, watching on TV or on a laptop, so we have to give them something back.

“We will try to be positive and hopefully we’ll give them something back next season. I can’t wait to get the ball rolling again, can’t wait to see them at the stadium. This is most important for me. Without the fans at the stadium, it feels like I’m playing alone! I hope I can see the fans as soon as possible.”
