Nicholson, Perryman, Tull - now in our new Legends section

Thu 06 August 2020, 15:25|Tottenham Hotspur

Bill Nicholson, 'Mr Tottenham', our legendary former skipper and record appearance maker Steve Perryman and the trailblazing figure of Walter Tull are the latest players/manager to join our all-new Legends section.

Player, coach, manager and the greatest figure in our history, Bill won eight major trophies as manager and put our Club on the worldwide map. Joining our groundstaff in 1936, he dedicated the next 38 years of his life to the cause, playing from 1938-54, coaching and then managing the team between 1958-74. After two years away, he was back, this time in a scouting role, and he stayed for another 21 years. That's why he's 'Mr Tottenham', and will never be forgotten.

'Stevie P' joined us in 1967, and signed professional forms in 1969. A member of the team that won the League Cup twice (1971, 1973) and UEFA Cup in 1972, he took over the captaincy in 1975 and held it until 1986, lifting the FA Cup twice (1981, 1982) and another UEFA Cup (1984) before departing in 1986. In that time, he made 854 appearances and holds our record for appearances in the league (655), FA Cup (69), League Cup (66) and Europe (64).

The first black professional outfield player to appear in the Football League, Walter's story goes beyond football. Initially signed on amateur forms in March, 1909, then professional in June that year, Walter made 10 appearances before joining Northampton Town in October, 1911. Glasgow Rangers were reportedly interested in his services but the onset of World War One changed everything. Walter joined the 17th (1st Football) Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment and had become the first British-born black combat officer in the British Army when he was killed in the second Battle of the Somme in March, 1918.

Three inspirational Spurs men - and we now have the stories of 11 of the greatest figures in our long history together in our Legends section. This is only the start, as we recognise the players and managers who made our great Club what it is today.
