Spurs Women shot stopper Becky Spencer admitted she was encouraged by our opening day performance in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League (WSL) but was ultimately disappointed that we couldn’t take anything from the game as Chelsea ran out 1-0 winners on Sunday afternoon.

Making her competitive debut for the Club, Becky could do little about the Blues' fourth-minute winner as Beth England’s stunning effort sailed into the top corner from 25 yards but she more than demonstrated her qualities between the sticks throughout the clash at Stamford Bridge, as she made a series of crucial saves.

At the other end, we were positive in attack and had chances of our own to get back into the game with Kit Graham, Coral-Jade Haines and Rachel Furness all coming close to restoring parity, as we impressed on our WSL debut.

Everyone put their bodies on the line for each other and I think that shows what kind of a team we are.

“We were disappointed not to get anything out of the game but, for our first Women’s Super League game, I thought we really stuck together as a unit and we showed what we’re about,” the goalkeeper explained.

“Everyone put their bodies on the line for each other and I think that shows what kind of a team we are.

“We can take the positives from that and obviously look at the things we need to work on but, overall, while we’re not happy (with the result), we know that we’ve got more to give and the result shows that we’re not just here to make up the numbers."

It was a record-breaking weekend for England’s Women’s top flight as numbers of supporters attending the division’s opening day fixtures reached a new high.

Over 60,000 fans attended games up and down the country with nearly 25,000 of those taking in our game in west London - fanatic support that Becky is hoping will continue right the way through the 22-game campaign.

“The buzz around the place was really good,” she smiled.

“It’s not something we’ve really seen around women’s football so having this weekend, we’re hoping we can get these attendances for the rest of the season, because it should be like that all of the time.”

We take on Liverpool in our first WSL home game at The Hive this Sunday (15 September), kick-off at 2pm. Fans can purchase tickets via The Hive’s ticketing platform.
