Internationals - Harry hat-trick on 'four-midable' Saturday

Sat 07 September 2019, 22:37|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane scored his second senior England hat-trick to help the Three Lions to a comfortable 4-0 win over Bulgaria in Euro 2020 qualifying on Saturday.

Having netted a treble against Panama at last summer’s World Cup, captain Harry repeated the feat at Wembley, netting a 24th-minute opener after some alert attacking play from eventual third goalscorer Raheem Sterling. His other goals both came from the penalty spot in the second half, Harry himself upended for the latter.

Withdrawn after 77 minutes, Harry saw Spurs team-mate Danny Rose complete the full 90 at left-back, while Harry Winks was an unused substitute.

In Paris on Saturday night, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris captained France as they also hit four in their Euro 2020 qualifier at home to Albania. Les Bleus had seemed on course to mirror England’s scoreline thanks to a brace from Kingsley Coman and goals from Olivier Giroud and Jonathan Ikone but, after Hugo was adjudged to have brought down Taulant Xhaka in the 90th minute, Sokol Cikalleshi scored the resulting penalty to make it 4-1. Moussa Sissoko was an unused substitute for the hosts.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, defender Davinson Sanchez put in a full shift for Colombia as they battled out a 2-2 friendly draw with Brazil in Florida.

Friday night’s European Championship qualifiers saw Belgium keep up their 100 per cent record in pursuit of a place in the tournament finals with a 4-0 victory away to San Marino. Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both played 90 minutes, Jan winning his 77th cap since joining us in 2012. Jan became our most-capped player ever at international level back in June, when he overtook Pat Jennings’ 75 caps for Northern Ireland.

Wales also edged to victory, seeing off Azerbaijan 2-1 in Cardiff with Ben Davies coming on for the last 10 minutes. Ex-Spur Gareth Bale grabbed the winner four minutes after Ben’s introduction. Winger Anthony Georgiou, currently on loan at Ipswich Town, was introduced as a 58th-minute substitute for Cyprus in their 1-1 home draw with Kazakhstan. Young midfielder Jack Roles, also out on loan with Cambridge United, marked his first senior international call-up with a place on the bench for the hosts.

There was misery for defender Serge Aurier, however, as his Ivory Coast side slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Benin in Caen, France. Serge played the full game.

Elsewhere on Friday, 17-year-old striker Troy Parrott scored the winner on his debut for Republic of Ireland Under-21s as they won 1-0 at home to Armenia in a European Under-21 Championship qualifier. On target just after the half-hour mark, Troy was substituted eight minutes from time. Central midfielder Oliver Skipp, meanwhile, was an unused substitute in his first appearance in a matchday squad for England Under-21s in Turkey. The Young Lions won 3-2 in Euro qualifying.
