Internationals - Sonny, Toby on target

Fri 11 October 2019, 09:51|Tottenham Hotspur

Toby Alderweireld and Heung-Min Son were on target in high-scoring victories for Belgium and South Korea in tournament qualifying matches on Thursday.

Earning his 95th cap, Toby struck from distance as Belgium racked up nine goals without reply against San Marino in Euro 2020 qualifying in Brussels. That makes it goals in back-to-back internationals after he scored against Scotland last month. Jan Vertonghen captained the team and earned his 117th cap. Both played 90 minutes as Belgium made it seven wins in seven in Group I. Not surprisingly, they have qualified for the finals.

In Sri Lanka, Sonny scored the first goal, set-up the second and then scored a penalty all before half-time as South Korea beat Sri Lanka 8-0 in Round 2 of Asia qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Colombo. Also captain, Sonny was substituted on the hour after taking his tally to 26 goals in 86 caps. South Korea now meet North Korea in Pyongyang on Tuesday.

Ben Davies completed a full shift on his 49th cap as Wales earned an important point away to Slovakia in Euro 2020 qualifying. Wales can still move up to second with a game in hand in Group E and they take on group leaders Croatia in Cardiff on Sunday. Anthony Georgiou was an unused substitute as Cyprus beat Kazakhstan.

Troy Parrott had an eventful night as Republic of Ireland Under-21s drew 0-0 against Italy in European qualifying in Tallaght, Dublin. The young striker was denied by a fine save from Marco Carnesecchi in the first half but was later sent off for a second bookable offence after a minor altercation with Moise Kean, who was shown a straight red.

Meanwhile, both Japhet Tanganga and Jack Clarke started for England Under-20s in a 2-2 draw against Italy in Parma. Japhet completed the 90, Jack was substituted on 72.
