Following last weekend’s trip to Liverpool, we return to Merseyside this Sunday to take on Everton (4.30pm kick-off).

In our last visit to Goodison Park, we came out on top in an eight-goal thriller as we strode to a 6-2 win in December, 2018.

So, ahead of the encounter, we put the Toffees under the spotlight.

Team news

Everton boss Marco Silva is hopeful defender Yerry Mina will be able to shake off a knee injury and be fit to start for his side on Sunday afternoon.

Winger Bernard (medial ligament) and midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin (thigh), however, remain unavailable for the Toffees.

Everton’s form

One win in their last six Premier League games has left Silva’s side in a sticky situation having slipped to 16th in the table. Since defeating Wolves 3-2 on 1 September, Everton have suffered losses to Bournemouth, Sheffield United, Manchester City, Burnley and Brighton, but they did pick up three points in their last home game in the league, as they secured a 2-0 win over West Ham. The Merseyside-based outfit have won three times in the top flight this season - all coming at Goodison Park– although they have made it through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after progressing past Watford on Tuesday night with a 2-0 triumph.

New faces

Everton had a busy summer in their recruitment drive, as they brought in six new faces. Goalkeeper Jonas Lössl was drafted in from Huddersfield Town, while full-back Djibril Sidibé was taken on loan from AS Monaco. Three new midfield options arrived with Fabian Delph moving from Manchester City, Jean-Philippe Gbamin joining from Mainz 05 and Alex Iwobi transferring from Arsenal – André Gomes also made his loan from Barcelona a permanent deal. Their forward ranks were also bolstered with the signing of Moise Kean from Juventus.

Leader of the opposition

Marco Silva is now into his second season in charge of Everton. A defender in his playing days, turning out for sides such as Rio Ave and Estoril, he moved into his first management role with the latter after hanging up his boots in 2011. Spells at the helm of Sporting CP and Olympiacos followed before he joined Hull City in January, 2017. Spending just five months in the East Riding of Yorkshire, he headed to Watford that summer but, again, his tenure was short lived as he left Vicarage Road seven months later, prior to joining the Toffees following the end of the 2017/18 season.

13 – We are unbeaten against Everton in our last 13 meetings. We last tasted defeat against the Toffees in December, 2012 (2-1).

5 - Everton have lost five of their last six Premier League games (W1), winning fewer points in the competition in that period than any other side (three).

7 – Everton have won seven of their last nine Premier League home games, though they have lost two of their last three. The Toffees have kept a clean sheet in seven of their last 10 Premier League matches at Goodison Park.

4 – Christian Eriksen has scored in each of his last four Premier League appearances for us against Everton. He’s scored five in total against the Toffees in the competition, only against Swansea (six) has he netted more.

Played for both

Lightning-quick winger Aaron Lennon spent almost an entire decade with us, making over 350 appearances, before departing for the Toffees in 2015.

A Leeds United academy graduate, Aaron joined us in the summer of 2005 at the age of 18 and immediately demonstrated his quality on the pitch which saw him nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year in each of his first two seasons. Part of our 2008 League Cup-winning team, the midfielder enjoyed one of his best seasons the following campaign as he was named the Club’s Player and Young Player of the Season and was once more nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

He scored some memorable goals for us, including the late equaliser in the 4-4 north London derby draw with Arsenal in October, 2008, and the even later winner in a 2-1 triumph over Liverpool in November, 2010. When he scored, we never lost. 30 goals for us in 29 different games to be exact - we won 26 of those.

With us, he earned 21 caps for England and played at both the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups. He left north London for Everton in January, 2015, on an initial loan deal before making that move permanent that summer. In 2018, he joined Burnley, where he continues to be a regular in Sean Dyche's side.
