Internationals - qualifying wins for Davies, Alderweireld and Aurier

Sat 16 November 2019, 23:18|Tottenham Hotspur

Ben Davies helped Wales claim a significant win in the race for a Euro 2020 spot on Saturday evening.

The left-back played 90 minutes as his nation won 2-0 away to Azerbaijan to put themselves just a point behind second-placed Hungary in qualifying Group E.

Ryan Giggs’ men will now face Hungary in a huge clash in Cardiff on Tuesday, where the winner will go through automatically to the tournament finals alongside Croatia, who have already won the group.

Elsewhere, Toby Alderweireld completed the full game for already-qualified Belgium as they kept up their flawless record in the pre-Euro 2020 campaign with a 4-1 victory in Russia.

Right-back Serge Aurier, meanwhile, captained Ivory Coast to a 1-0 home win over Niger in their opening qualifier for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Also winning 1-0 on Saturday, albeit in the early hours of the morning, was defender Davinson Sanchez, whose Colombia side got the better of Peru in a friendly match played in Florida. Davinson completed the full game.

Saturday was also a busy day in European Under-19 Championship qualifying with three of our Development Squad players in action for their respective nations. Chief among them was midfielder Jamie Bowden, who grabbed two assists and two goals for Republic of Ireland Under-19s in an astonishing 13-0 win over Gibraltar in Austria. Jamie started and was substituted right at the end of the game after a great day’s work.

Fellow midfielder Paris Maghoma went on for the last 13 minutes of England Under-19s’ 5-0 win over hosts North Macedonia, while defender Maxi Tainio was introduced as a 71st-minute substitute for Finland Under-19s in a 2-0 loss to France in Denmark.

Young left-back Dennis Cirkin was an unused substitute for England Under-18s in their 4-4 draw with Norway in Spain.
