Ben Davies helped Wales secure qualification for a third major tournament in their history as they swept past Hungary 2-0 in a crunch match in Cardiff on Tuesday night.

The left-back played the full 90 minutes for Ryan Giggs’ side as they jumped into second place in Group E of Euro 2020 qualifying, thus securing an automatic place at next summer’s finals.

Centre-back Toby Alderweireld also saw action with a full shift at the back for Belgium as they completed their qualifying campaign with an unblemished 100 per cent record thanks to a 6-1 thrashing of Cyprus in Brussels.

Earlier in the day, captain Serge Aurier scored in the fourth minute of Ivory Coast’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Ethiopia, but the hosts turned things around to inflict a 2-1 defeat on Serge’s side. There was also disappointment for Heung-Min Son, who played 90 minutes for South Korea in their 3-0 friendly loss to Brazil in Abu Dhabi.

Elsewhere on Tuesday evening, Oliver Skipp played 90 minutes and Ryan Sessegnon the last 14 off the bench as England Under-21s slipped to a 2-1 defeat away to the Netherlands in a friendly. After being with the senior Republic of Ireland senior squad this week, striker Troy Parrott started and scored for Ireland’s Under-21s as they won 4-1 at home to Sweden in a European Under-21 Championship qualifier.

Centre-back Japhet Tanganga and on-loan attacker Jack Clarke both featured for England Under-20s in their 3-0 win over Iceland in Wycombe. Jack played the full game while Japhet was introduced as a substitute in the 72nd minute.

In qualifying for the European Under-19 Championships, midfielder Paris Maghoma went on as a 73rd-minute substitute for England Under-19s in their 4-1 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina in North Macedonia while defender Maxi Tainio was ever-present for Finland Under-19s as they drew 1-1 with the Faroe Islands in Denmark. Central midfielder Jamie Bowden was an unused substitute for Republic of Ireland Under-19s, who finished their 2-0 loss to hosts Austria with nine men. Austria also had a player sent off.
