Yesterday (Thursday 7 November), the Club welcomed members of the British Army’s Royal Corps of Signals to our stadium for a motivational talk with Club Ambassador Gary Mabbutt MBE.
The session, which focussed on the topic of leadership, saw Gary share experiences and reflections on his football career, including his 11-year tenure as club captain of Tottenham Hotspur. This was followed by a Q&A with the signals, covering areas such as self-belief, resilience, teamwork and motivation. The group also discussed different types of leadership and the importance of leading by example.
The Royal Corps of Signals is one of the British Army’s combat support arms, providing battlefield communications and information systems that are essential to all military operations.
Gary’s talk formed part of a full-day workshop for the signals, designed to help develop and hone their leadership skills, and prepare them for senior military roles in the future. Before coming to the stadium, they visited the National Army Museum and took part in an escape room challenge to test their teamwork and decision-making ability.
“Leadership is about building a positive mentality within your team that allows you all to overcome challenges and work towards the common goal,” said Gary.
Warrant Officer Simon Williams said: “Soldiers at all ranks and in all situations rely on leadership traits to get the mission or task complete.
“Gary Mabbutt kept his team focussed as he led them to win trophies, but also motivated them to bounce back after defeat – all traits a soldier in the British Army can relate to.”
The talk formed part of the Club’s activities around the Remembrance period, during which we have been showing our support for our Armed Forces, veterans and the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Tomorrow’s home fixture against Sheffield United will be dedicated to Remembrance. We look forward to welcoming members of our Armed Forces Spurs Official Supporters’ Club, representative of the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force, as we observe a period of silence ahead of kick-off.
