Champions League moments - Paulo Gazzaniga

Mon 20 May 2019, 16:38|Tottenham Hotspur

Our journey to the Champions League Final has provided moments we'll never forget. Lucas Moura's hat-trick at Ajax, Fernando Llorente's goal and the nerve-shredding VAR decisions at Manchester City, Heung-Min Son's goals against City, Jan Vertonghen's performance against Borussia Dortmund and those late, late goals against PSV, Inter and Barcelona that turned 'mission impossible' into the reality of Madrid.

We're counting down to the final on 1 June with a series of 'Champions League moments' from the players who made it all happen.

It's not just about the moments that will go down in Spurs folklore. Every player has played his part, each contribution taking us another step closer to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

We kick-off with Paulo Gazzaniga. What a season for the goalkeeper from the same small town in Argentina as Mauricio Pochettino, Murphy. He's made 11 appearances in all competitions including his debut in the Champions League and won his first cap for Argentina when he lined-up against Mexico in November.

We go back to 6 November and Matchday Four of the group stage against PSV at Wembley for Paulo's moment...

Champions League moments - Gazzaniga denies Malen

Spurs 2-1 PSV, MD4, Wembley

Two weeks earlier, 24 October, the dream looked over in Eindhoven. Hugo Lloris was sent off late, we conceded even later and departed PSV with a 2-2 draw, leaving us with one point from our first three group games. Players spoke of believing we could still do it, but even Mauricio Pochettino told Spurs TV afterwards that 'the reality is that it will be so tough to go to the next stage of the Champions League'.

Phase one of the recovery was to beat PSV in MD4 at Wembley. Failure to do that and it was all over. Paulo came in for suspended Hugo to make his Champions League debut but was beaten with only 62 seconds on the clock when Luuk de Jong headed home Gaston Pereiro's corner.

We dominated from there and finally broke PSV's resistance on 78 minutes when Fernando Llorente cushioned the ball for Harry Kane to fire home from 16 yards.

Still needing the win, time running out, Paulo's moment followed. PSV hit us on the counter, Steven Bergwijn picked out Donyell Malen's run and the substitute raced clear into the penalty area, right of centre, Paulo to beat. Spurs fans held their breath. Goal and we're most likely out of the Champions League. Malen opted to go with power and aimed top left. Paulo, crouching, threw his hands up and managed to tip the effort over the bar, an instinctive, reaction save.

It’s the job of everyone to.... how can I explain? To give his little star in this universe. That’s why this team is amazing...

Paulo Gazzaniga

Paulo was typically modest looking back this week. "Obviously it’s important for me but everyone put his best into every single game and that is the result of the work of all the team," he said.

"It was a good pass, they came through and it’s what we do always with Toni (Jimenez, goalkeeping coach), try to hold my position, don’t guess and make the save. This is the result of working in training and just trying to help my team-mates. It’s not only that game, it’s day to day. The most important thing is to be focussed on training every day and when the games come, if you do well, the team does well.

"It’s the job of everyone to... how can I explain? To give his little star in this universe. That’s why this team is amazing, because everyone tries to help and gives his best."

Seven minutes after Paulo's save, we found the crucial winner as Harry headed home his second on the night for 2-1. Late goals followed against Inter and Barcelona to take us through the group stages. Memorable ties followed against Borussia Dortmund, City and Ajax and now the final awaits - every step to Madrid taken thanks to the collective spirit of the squad.

Paulo added: "It’s been amazing, just amazing and now we’ve reached the final, we want to win it. For the Club it’s historic, the first Champions League Final, but we now want to win it. The loser is never remembered. We are now focussed on winning."
