Champions League moments - Christian Eriksen

Thu 23 May 2019, 15:06|Tottenham Hotspur

The team has developed a wonderful habit of scoring late winners this season - eight in total, and none more dramatic than Lucas Moura’s hat-trick goal at Ajax to send us through to the Champions League Final.

Two arrived earlier in the competition and kept us on the path to Madrid. First up, Harry Kane’s winner in the 89th minute to beat PSV in Matchday Four. Three weeks later, Christian Eriksen delivered in the 80th minute to topple Inter in MD5. Without either, there would be no Madrid. These were crucial, crucial goals.

Our Great Dane certainly has the magic touch. Of the eight late goals this term, he’s produced three, all match-winning strikes in 1-0 wins against Inter, Burnley and Brighton, the latter two earning six points in the Premier League.

Champions League moments – Eriksen sinks Inter

Spurs 1-0 Inter – MD5 – Wembley – 28 November, 2018

Three weeks after a finding late goals to beat PSV and stay alive in the Champions League, here we were again. Inter in Matchday Five, victory required, nothing less.

Once again, it was a nerve-shredding night as we searched for the breakthrough. Harry Kane hit the post, Harry Winks struck the crossbar, Dele, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela all had decent efforts and Jan Vertonghen headed wide. At the other end, Hugo Lloris kept out Ivan Perisic.

As we ticked into the 80th minute it was still 0-0 and we were heading out. Then Moussa Sissoko picked up the ball, 40 yards from goal, right side and drove into the box, leaving Marcelo Brozovic and Milan Skriniar in his wake. Moussa squared for Dele, back to goal. He controlled, spun and rolled the ball into the path of Christian Eriksen, who planted the ball into the roof of the net.

Looking back at the replay, Christian was inside the centre-circle when Moussa started his run. Watching play develop, his jog turned into a sprint and he was there when it mattered, eight yards out, with such a clever finish as Danilo D’Ambrosio, Brozovic and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic all threw themselves in front of him.

It was a crucial moment, our last chance in the game and so important to get those points and still be in the group stage with some control

Christian reflected: “The build-up started down the right, Moussa into Dele, who then turned and I thought ‘is he going to shoot, is he going to pass?’ but luckily he saw me, passed the ball and I ran onto it.

“I knew when the ball arrived that it felt like everyone was on the ground, so I had to kick it high into the goal to avoid everyone. Maybe it was a bit lucky but they all count.

“It was perfect timing to score that goal and a crucial moment, our last chance in the game and so important to get those points and still be in the group stage with some control.

“We were confident. We'd won six points (PSV, Inter) before the last game (at Barca) and it made a big difference. It could have been one point after four games, but we felt we should have beaten Inter away and same against PSV. It was still tough but we were confident going to the Nou Camp.”

The rest, as they say, is history...
