Mason to be in dugout for new stadium Test Event match

Tue 12 March 2019, 17:15|Tottenham Hotspur

We are delighted to confirm that Ryan Mason will be in the dugout for the first ever football match to be played at our new stadium on Sunday 24 March.

Our popular former midfielder, who has been shadowing our Academy coaching staff since his retirement as a player last year and regularly involved on Under-18 matchdays as he works through his coaching badges, will once again join Head of Player Development John McDermott on the sidelines for our Under-18 Premier League fixture against Southampton – the first of two high-profile Test Event matches to take place inside our world-class new home.

Having risen through our Academy system himself to become an important member of the first team squad under Mauricio Pochettino, Ryan made 70 senior appearances for us and started the 2015 League Cup Final before moving on to Hull City in 2016. Following his injury-enforced retirement, he remains a valued member of the Spurs family.

To be part of this occasion now as we test out the new stadium fills me with excitement and pride.

“It’s a great privilege for our group of players and staff to have the honour of participating in the first game in the new stadium,” said Ryan. “The Academy has worked well for the Club over the years and I think it’s fitting that the first match in our new home is going to showcase our current youth talent. It’s going to be an historic moment for everyone involved – including the players, coaches and fans – and I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to be part of it. I was lucky enough to have some incredible experiences as a player in the old stadium and to be part of this occasion now as we test out the new stadium fills me with excitement and pride.”

Ticket applications are still open for Season Ticket Holders to attend both Test Event matches featuring our Under-18s and Legends – we urge to you apply quickly before the application window closes at 5pm tomorrow (Wednesday) to avoid disappointment. Please take this opportunity to come along, familiarise yourself with the stadium and enjoy the historic first two matches to take place there so that we can open our new home.
