Internationals – Foyth helps Argentina into quarter-finals

Mon 24 June 2019, 10:47|Tottenham Hotspur

Juan Foyth joined Davinson Sanchez in the quarter-finals of the Copa America on Sunday night after helping Argentina register their first win of the tournament.

The young defender came in for his first appearance of the competition in Brazil, having been on the bench for Argentina’s opening two fixtures, and played 85 minutes in a 2-0 victory over Qatar.

The result ensured Argentina will advance to the last eight as runners-up in Group B behind Davinson’s Colombia, who kept up their 100 per cent record at the tournament with a 1-0 win over Paraguay. Centre-back Davinson was an unused substitute in that match as coach Carlos Queiroz rotated his side.

Argentina will face Group A runners-up Venezuela in the quarter-finals in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (kick-off 8pm UK time). Colombia are still waiting to find out who they’ll face in São Paulo.

Elsewhere on Sunday night, there was disappointment for Victor Wanyama as his Kenya side suffered a 2-0 loss to Algeria in their opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. Captain Victor played the full 90 minutes in central midfield.

Serge Aurier’s Ivory Coast kick-off their AFCON campaign this afternoon (Monday, kick-off 3.30pm) against South Africa.
