Club to compete in EFL Trophy again in 2019/20

Fri 14 June 2019, 13:14|Tottenham Hotspur

Our Development Squad will compete in the EFL Trophy again next season.

It will be our third season in the competition - where we field an Under-21 team - also known as the Checkatrade Trophy. Last season we progressed from the group stage after a win at Gillingham, draw at Crawley and narrow loss at eventual-winners Portsmouth. We went out in the second round after a loss at Oxford.

We are one of 16 teams invited into the competition with Liverpool and Manchester United making their first appearance in 2019/20.

The competition is initially split into northern and south sections with 32 teams in each section in eight groups of four. Invited clubs play regional group games away from home with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stages.

The tournament goes national at the quarter-final stage (round four) and culminates with the final at Wembley Stadium - over 85,000 fans saw Pompey beat Sunderland in last season's final.

The draw for the group stage will take place in July, with the first round of fixtures scheduled to take place on the week commencing Monday 2 September.
