Heung-Min Son: "Win was an unbelievable feeling"

Thu 31 January 2019, 17:25|Tottenham Hotspur

A photograph captured Heung-Min Son’s reaction after equalising against Watford on Wednesday night. It was a reaction that screamed ‘we can do this’ – it’s at the top of this page.

“I believed it because we had a long time left and a goal can happen in one second, five seconds, 10 seconds, we have to believe in every single moment,” explained Sonny. “And we did that.”

Six minutes later and Fernando Llorente completed the comeback from 1-0 down to a valuable 2-1 win at Wembley.

With a few results going our way in the Premier League on Tuesday and Wednesday night – and not least after exiting two cup competitions in the days before – victory was vital.

I love to be back here, to see the fans, my team-mates and the win means so much to me. I’m very happy to be back

Sonny had watched those cup defeats while on Asian Cup duty with South Korea in the UAE. He also suffered heartbreak after losing in the quarter-final against Qatar. Back in the fold after arriving back in the UK on Saturday, he performed admirably in a full 90-minute shift as we chalked up league win number 18 this season.

“I was following the (cup) games when I was away, of course I was disappointed we were knocked out in the semi-final (of the Carabao Cup) and then the FA Cup as well,” he said. "I came back, we won, it’s exciting and I love to be back here, to see the fans, my team-mates and the win means so much to me. I’m very happy to be back.

“We needed this win. We created chances in the first half but didn’t find the goal. We tried, then they scored with a little bit of luck from a set-piece. It’s difficult to change the game in the second half but we showed very good character, mentality and in the end we deserved to get the three points.”

Asked how he felt when Fernando’s header nestled home, Sonny added: “Unbelievable. I came back from the tournament, I was very disappointed and if we’d lost today, it would have been even more disappointment. I can be a little happier with this win so yes, it was an unbelievable feeling.”
