Victor joins record-breaker Kipchoge to inspire Tottenham schoolchildren to get active

On Friday (13 December), local schoolchildren were joined by Spurs midfielder Victor Wanyama and marathon world record-breaker Eliud Kipchoge to run The Daily Mile - an initiative that encourages kids to take part in 15 minutes of physical activity every day.

Spurs fan Eliud, who is a friend of fellow Kenyan Victor, made history in October at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge by becoming the first person to run a sub-two-hour marathon. In recognition of his achievement, he was voted BBC Sports Personality's World Sport Star of the Year this weekend.

Friday’s event at Earlsmead Primary School in Tottenham gave 120 students the opportunity to ask Victor and Eliud questions about who inspires them, how they stay motivated and what advice they would give to young people.

The pair then ran laps around the playground with the children to celebrate the success of The Daily Mile, which now sees up to 245,000 young Londoners taking part during the school day.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation supports the initiative in schools across Enfield and Haringey, as part of its commitment to increasing participation in sport and making physical activity a regular habit for people living in the Club’s local community.

Foundation coaches also spend one day a week delivering PE support in the area’s schools through Premier League Primary Stars. The programme helps teachers build confidence in planning and executing high-quality PE lessons.

Speaking at the event, Eliud said: “It is a great honour to be here with Victor today. As a Daily Mile Ambassador and fan of Spurs, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. This truly is a fantastic event to encourage children to get more involved in sport and promote the importance of regular exercise.”

Victor added: “It’s incredible to be here with my friend Eliud Kipchoge. Having made history in Vienna this year, he really is a true inspiration. Our aim today is to encourage young people everywhere to be active, which makes a real difference to their health and wellbeing.”
