Eyoma on a 'massive opportunity' against Ipswich

Tue 03 September 2019, 08:35|Tottenham Hotspur

Our Development Squad kick-off their Leasing.com Trophy campaign tonight against League One outfit Ipswich Town (7.45pm).

Last season, we reached the knockout stages of the competition for the first time, having finished second in our group behind eventual winners Portsmouth, before our run in the tournament was ultimately ended in the second round by Oxford United.

This year, with games against Colchester United and Gillingham still to come in the group stages, we get underway with a trip to Portman Road where defender TJ Eyoma is expecting a stern test.

Relegated from the Championship at the end of last season, our Suffolk-based opposition have made a strong start to life in England’s third tier as, with six games gone, they sit at the summit of the League One table and are yet to taste defeat so far this campaign.

This is a massive opportunity for us as players to show what we’re about.

“Ipswich are a very good team. They’re top of the league and unbeaten, so I think this will be a very tough test for us,” TJ explained.

“First and foremost, we have to compete in the match, but it will be a beneficial game for us as we’ll be up against their first team.

“This is a massive opportunity for us as players to show what we’re about and to have the chance to play against the first team of a club like Ipswich at this stage of our development will help us in our careers, so I think it will be an interesting game.”

Like Ipswich, our Development Squad have also enjoyed a promising start to their league campaign as, after four games, we sit third in the Premier League 2 table.

In each of our outings so far, 19-year-old TJ has captained the side and while he admits the start has been encouraging, his focus is keeping up that bright form and helping the team kick on.

“The team we have this year is very close. We’re good friends, not just in football, but outside as well,” he explained.

“We've started the season quite well compared to previous seasons. I think we just need to keep going with that form and hopefully we can continue to improve and develop this season.”
