The South Korean star has written his name in Club history - twice.
Last week, he scored the first senior goal at our magnificent new stadium to open the scoring in the 2-0 win against Palace.
If that wasn’t enough, Sonny has doubled-up with a goal that could be of even greater significance, this time the first European goal at our new home and the winner in the Champions League quarter-final, first leg against Manchester City. We take our 1-0 lead to the Etihad next Wednesday, 17 April.
“It’s a dream and I always say, when you think positively, positive things happen,” said Sonny after that crucial goal against City.
“I believe in my team-mates, I believe in our fans, I believe in our stadium. It was an unbelievable performance from us. This is amazing.”
In scoring these historic goals, Sonny joins Club legends Vivian Woodward and Danny Blanchflower on any Spurs ‘firsts’ list for the rest of time.
One of the early superstars of the game, let’s say the Harry Kane of his day, Vivian Woodward holds the distinction of scoring our first goal in the Football League – and first league goal at the old White Hart Lane – when he opened the scoring in a 3-0 win against Wolves in the old Division Two in 1908.
He scored 44 goals in 104 appearances for us between 1901-08 in the Southern League and then 18 in 27 games in our first league season, top scoring as we clinched promotion at the first attempt into Division One.
He also scored 29 goals in 23 caps for England (13 as captain) and skippered the Great Britain team to Olympic golds in 1908 and 1912. He also reached the rank of Major in the First World War.
Danny Blanchflower will be forever remembered as the captain of our great double-winning team of 1960/61. A mastermind in midfield, he also lifted the FA Cup again in 1962 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963.
The Northern Irishman also made Club history by scoring the first European goal at the Lane in one of the Club’s most famous nights, the 8-1 second leg victory against Gornik Zabrze in our first European Cup tie in September, 1961. Danny slotted home from the spot that night as we recovered from a 4-2 first leg deficit to progress 10-5 on aggregate. We went on to reach the semi-finals that season.
One of the all-time greats, Danny joined us in 1954 and went on to make 382 appearances before announcing his retirement in 1964. He sadly passed away in 1993.
It was pointed out to Sonny that his name would now go down in Spurs folklore and that people would still be talking about these two goals in generations to follow.
“I hope people don’t forget me after 50, 60 years!” he said, smiling. “It feels great.
“I’m just honoured to play here, to score goals, to win a game like this, it’s incredible for me. It feels amazing. I’ve learned so much here and I’m just grateful have been given the opportunity.”
