Latest from the international stage

Tue 11 September 2018, 22:42|Tottenham Hotspur

Danny Rose was named Man of the Match as a much-changed England side returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Switzerland on Tuesday evening.

Left-back Danny put in an energetic performance from the start in the friendly match at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium before being replaced by the Foxes’ own Ben Chilwell – on for his senior international debut in his home stadium – in the 79th minute.

Eric Dier also started and captained the team, while Harry Kane and Kieran Trippier came on during the second half. Dele Alli withdrew from the squad with a minor injury on Monday.

The winning goal came from Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford in the 54th minute.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, defenders Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both got a full game under their belts in Belgium’s 3-0 win away to Iceland in the UEFA Nations League. Midfielder Mousa Dembele stepped off the bench for the last 10 minutes.

Heung-Min Son played 90 minutes as captain for South Korea as they drew 0-0 at home to Chile in a friendly, while full-back Kyle Walker-Peters also put in a full shift as England Under-21s took a big step towards securing qualification for the European Under-21 Championship finals with a 2-1 win in Latvia. Josh Onomah, currently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, was an unused substitute for the Young Lions.

On Sunday, Christian Eriksen scored either side of half-time, the second one a penalty, to give Denmark a 2-0 home win over Ben Davies’ Wales in the UEFA Nations League. Christian and Ben both played the full 90, as did Serge Aurier in Ivory Coast’s 2-1 victory away to Rwanda in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

Three of our Under-18s players also played 90 minutes on the international stage on Sunday. Striker Troy Parrott represented Republic of Ireland Under-19s in a 1-0 friendly defeat at home to Wales, attacking midfielder Phoenix Patterson’s first start for Scotland Under-19s ended in a 4-3 friendly defeat in Poland while versatile defensive midfielder Maxi Tainio was part of the Finland Under-19s side that drew 0-0 at home to Greece.

On Monday, two Development Squad players found themselves in opposite camps as Belgium Under-19s hosted England Under-19s. Goalkeeper Jonathan De Bie played the full game for the hosts while defender TJ Eyoma was an unused substitute for the Young Lions, who won 2-1. Elsewhere, midfielder Marcus Edwards, currently on loan at Excelsior in Holland, was in action in that same country, playing 69 minutes for England Under-20s in a 3-1 friendly defeat to the Netherlands.
