From Seville to Stratford, Harry Winks was left to reflect on a week to remember after victory against West Ham on Saturday.
The midfielder earned his second cap and started in England’s famous 3-2 win against Spain on Monday night alongside team-mates Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Kieran Trippier.
He was back in the engine room at the London Stadium on Saturday as we were made to fight for a 1-0 win thanks to Erik Lamela’s goal just before half-time.
That made it seven wins in nine – our best start to a Premier League season after nine games.
“It’s been amazing, I can’t really put it into words,” said the 22-year-old of his week. “It’s incredible and I want to keep these moments going, enjoy them and keep working to get more.
“To play against Spain and get a win and then to come back (to the Club), get our heads focused on this game and get the win is just brilliant.”
Lamela’s goal capped a controlled first half display but, as expected, the Hammers came on strong in the second half and Hugo Lloris was forced to make three fine saves.
Winksy added: “The first half was good, we had a lot of possession and we were in control. In the second half we knew they were going to come after us, they had nothing to lose, 1-0 down and it got tight, aggressive and we had to fight – sometimes you have to win ugly.
“It’s good to get a clean sheet, vital, especially against a team like West Ham with the set-pieces and the balls into the box. It was important that we stayed strong, defended well and kept a clean sheet.
“At the end of the season, no one will remember good possession, you will remember the three points.”
Meanwhile, Winsky had words of praise for matchwinner Lamela after his fifth goal in seven. “He’s flying and he’s key, he gets big goals in big games,” Harry added.
“He’s done it again today (against West Ham). It’s more than that though, his hold up play, his combination play, he was excellent.”
