As we prepare to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Armed conflict at tonight’s Remembrance game against Manchester City, the Club is supporting ‘There But Not There’ – a national charity campaign to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Harry Kane, Mousa Dembele and Michel Vorm stood alongside the charity’s six-foot ‘Tommy’ statues, silhouettes of fallen heroes, and took a moment to remember those who lost their lives.
The Tommies are part of a nationwide art installation set up by the charity Remembered, which is led by former Chief of the General Staff, General The Lord Dannatt.
The Club lost 16 players during the Great War, many of whom joined the Army as part of ‘football battalions’ – George Badenoch, James Chalmers, Jim Fleming, Fred Griffiths, Alan Haig-Brown, John Hebdon, Alf Hobday, John Jarvie, Ed Lightfoot, Harold Lloyd, Alex Mcgregor, James Moles, Walter Tull, Findlay Weir, Archie Wilson, Norman Wood.
Harry Kane said: “It’s an honour to stand alongside the Tommy statues and remember those who left their families and communities to fight for their country. They made the ultimate sacrifice for us so it’s important that we pay tribute to them.”
Director of There But Not There and former Army Captain Rowley Gregg MC said: “It is so fitting that our Tommies have stood shoulder-shoulder with Tottenham’s players as the Club and its supporters remember their fallen from the First World War. These images will ensure that the incredible sacrifices made by so many 100 years ago are not forgotten by young and old fans alike.”
There But Not There has raised more than £4m since its launch in February. Alongside the six-foot Tommies, a range of 10-inch figures are also being produced and sold by Remembered.
All profits made from sales of these Tommies, which are built by ex-servicemen and women, will go to a group of mental health and armed forces charities. These are… The Royal Foundation: Heads Together, Walking With The Wounded, Combat Stress, Help for Heroes, Project Equinox: Housing Veterans and Medical Students, and Commonwealth War Graves Foundation.
