Christian Eriksen and Denmark’s run in the World Cup came to a dramatic, heart-breaking end for our midfield maestro against Croatia in Russia on Sunday evening.
The Danes lost 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out after it finished 1-1 after extra time in Nizhny Novgorod.
Christian stepped up first in the shoot-out and struck his effort well only to see goalkeeper Danijel Subasic touch the ball onto the post.
That was the first of three penalty saves from Monaco number one Subasic, the third setting it up for Ivan Rakitic to slot home the decisive spot-kick for Croatia.
Subasic’s opposite number Kasper Schmeichel also saved two penalties and another from Luka Modric late in extra time to take the game to the shoot-out.
Earlier, Denmark opened the scoring after just 57 seconds through Mathias Jorgensen only for Mario Mandzukic to level three minutes later.
Christian clipped the crossbar with one effort in the first half and had a few half-chances without seriously testing Subasic.
Croatia now face Russia in the quarter-finals on Saturday after the hosts stunned highly-fancied Spain in a penalty shoot-out after it ended 1-1 in Moscow.
